week 7: the winter CSA

Remember how I mentioned that Joe & I signed up for a second CSA without realizing how much it overlapped our first one? We decided to buy into the second one regardless, ready to fill our freezer with goodies to get us through the sparse weeks of late winter.

This weekend, we drove out to Musgrave Orchard for their Core Farms CSA. Another couple joined with us, so we drove through the winding back roads to the Orchard. The storefront was open with families milling about. Pumpkins were selling for 40 cents a pound.

We wrapped around the storefront to the root cellar, where the owner was snipping the roots from gorgeous arugula. And then… raspberries!

And gala apples and squash and greens and greens and greens.

The bounty was unbelievable. The sun was shining. Our fingers were died with autumn berries. Tiny splinters were slipping into the boys’ fingers from the heft of our baskets.

The rest of the week has been a frantic rush to cook greens before they wilt. Beet, sweet potato & kale soup. Roasted beet pasta sauce. (Thanks, Sarah H… I’m learning to love them.) Roasted vegetable ratatouille. We’re getting better at eating in season, & I haven’t even thought about ordering a pizza this week! (Granted, we did spend the weekend in St. Louis eating at our favorite restaurants.)

I can’t wait to see what this Saturday brings into our CSA baskets.
